Preston "John" Porter, Jr. Vigil

In partnership with the Colorado Lynching Memorial Project and St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church we will be commemorating the life of 15 year old Preston “John” Porter, Jr and remembering his murder by lynching in Limon, Colorado on November 16, 1900. He was tortured into confessing to a crime he did not commit, yet never tried nor convicted in a US Court.

In 2018, soil was gathered from Denver and Limon, where he was tortured and later burned to death, and then added to the Equal Justice Initiative’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice remembering those killed in acts of racial terrorism. The Denver City Council proclaimed: “November 16, 2018 as a day to remember and condemn the lynching, by burning, of sixteen-year-old, African American, Preston “John” Porter, Jr. on November 16, 1900 and to acknowledge the city of Denver’s complicity in his torturous death.”

We will hold this vigil to continue to remember his life and condemn ALL acts of racial terror, past and present.
